Tanzanites are the youngest of the popular gemstones used in gemstone jewelry making. It is mined from one part of the world, Tanzania in Africa. The formation of tanzanite was believed to be the result of lightning striking the plains near Arusha, starting a fire which heated brown zoisites on the ground into this lovely purple blue gem.

They have recently been named a birthstone for December as an alternative to blue topaz. They often come in colors ranging from dark velvety blue to light lavender. As one of the few trichroic gems, the stone displays different colors, either red, blue, or purple depending on the angle it's observed. Sometimes flashes of green, orange, and brown can also be present.

Most popular color is blue, which is a color that requires more cutting. Though it results in a smaller gem, the beautiful hue is well worth the sacrifice in size.
