Swaroyski crystal got its start over one hundred years ago when Daniel Swaroyski and his three sons began production of crystals in the Alps of Austria. Using lead, glass, and other materials Swaroyski was able to produce jewelry with a new machine he patented that cuts with exacting precision. The process of making lead crystal was discovered by the English glassmaker George Ravenscroft in 1676.

Lead crystal was first discovered by George Ravenscroft in 1676. Crystal jewelry is high quality glass containing at least 24% lead oxide. Glass containing at least 30% lead oxide is called full lead crystal. When lead is added to melted glass, it produces a product resembling rock crystal. To achieve the brilliant iridescent effects seen in crystals such as the Aurea Beuroealis and Fire Ball pieces created by Swarovski, crystal is colored by adding water and layers of metal.
